Work on the first classroom building at the Lidzinji Primary School in Chepezi is progressing well. With the foundation completed and the surrounding walls raised to roof level, roofing work has now begun and is advancing quickly. As reported in our last blog post, regular visits to the site accompany this process - they keep the quality and pace of the work under continuous review and, at the same time, allow us to communicate progress transparently.
Once again, Father Paul Sanogo, the priest of the parish of Mua in the Diocese of Dedza who is responsible for this school, was on site. Frank Banda, a board member of our local partner NGO, likewise walked the site once more with a critical eye. Joining them for the first time was the architect we have commissioned as Technical Advisor, who provides professional oversight of the works and now carried out his first inspection. His role is to assess progress independently and in line with legal requirements, to measure quality against professional standards, and to guide the contractor with specific instructions wherever needed.
The building is visibly taking shape. The walls stand at roof height, both gable ends are complete, and the window and door frames are in place. For the roofing, the timber trusses are aligned and ready, the iron sheets have been delivered to site, and the material for the subsequent plastering has already been stored there as well. In the course of the work, parts of the original design have been refined for technical reasons: the veranda (khonde) supports are now being built in steel rather than concrete, which improves stability, and the position of the ablution facilities has been adjusted for a better layout across the school grounds. The accompanying septic pit has already been excavated.
The visits left a positive impression. The Technical Advisor found the pace of the work remarkable and the execution sound and professional, with the masonry straight and carefully laid. Where he identified individual points for improvement, he passed the corresponding instructions to the contractor; which is precisely the purpose of independent professional oversight.
