Environmental Responsibility in Chepezi - 15.07.2026

In our previous post, we reported that the grounds of the school site in Chepezi had been prepared for the start of construction. But what does this mean in practice?

To prepare the foundations, all obstacles on the construction site must be removed. These include large stones, but unfortunately also a small number of trees. The issue of removing trees was therefore once again carefully considered in Chepezi. Over the past decades, Malawi has experienced extensive deforestation, partly due to the production of charcoal. Protecting the remaining trees is therefore all the more important.

To address this matter responsibly, we met once again with Head Teacher Peter Kazika and the Dedza education authorities. Together, we concluded that the four mango trees located on the site of the first building of Lidzinji Primary School have to be felled. However, the Goeldner Foundation has committed to planting two new trees for every tree that is removed.

In addition, plans are already under way to establish a permaculture garden on the school grounds. This will give the pupils the opportunity to gain practical experience in growing and caring for plants while strengthening their awareness of nature and the environment.
